HIDING FROM THE TRUTH

Jack knows my truth. There’s no hiding anything from him anymore. He knows, and he cradled me while I cried and kissed me so sweetly my heart ached. He showed me the sympathy I never expected.

And now he’s found a way to give me what I need to step out of my turmoil for a while.

Guilt prickles beneath my skin for wanting to get lost in pleasure and pain when Hallie should be the center of all my focus, but missing her is destroying me, piece by piece. I have to find a way to preserve what little is left to fight for her.

The sound of feet on the hardwood forces me to twist. Almost entirely concealed by shadows, Finn and West enter from the hallway. How long have they been there? Did they hear my confession? Did they see me break and Jack attempt to put me back together?

Finn drops to his knees, bending so his face is close to mine. “Skye, is this what you want?”

He touches a tear that’s leaked from the corner of my eye.

“Yes.” I blink, and another tear comes loose. His eyes follow its path into my hair and are filled with so much concern it makes me want to weep more.

“Just forget about the contract tonight,” West says firmly. “We don’t have any expectations of you while you’re upset.”

My mouth drops open with surprise. I’m naked and bound on the living room rug, and he’s hard as a rock beneath his gray sleep shorts. But he’s prepared to let me get dressed and go to my room alone if that’s what I want.

I let my gaze pass over them all, realizing suddenly that they’re all different men than I thought. Or maybe different is the wrong word. The way they dressed my room before I arrived, protected me from Ethan, and gave me pleasure; all those things displayed their character. They were just overwhelmed by the darker aspects of restriction and Jack’s temper, which has now dropped away like a skin he’s outgrown.

Their kindness and care only make me want this more.

“I need this.” My voice is so raspy, but it has an urgency that they seem to understand. Finn looks first to West and then to Jack, and whatever passes between them leads to Finn kissing my lips with a gentle softness that wraps warmly around my heart. West drops to his knees, too, trailing his warm, calloused palm over my belly and breasts. The rough parts, developed by swinging an ax or wielding a chainsaw, make me shiver with every pass.

Finn kisses down my throat, making soft, appreciative sounds as I close my eyes.

Jack bends between my legs and kisses the inside of my thigh. It’s a sweet gesture, but then he bites hard enough to make me jump, and I expel a long breath of relief. He kisses the spot he hurt, and I let my legs drop further open, inviting him to do more.

My craving for pain still confuses me.
